Sunday School lessons for 4th, 5th, and 6th grades.
Lesson 1 “God’s great Christmas gift”
Emphasis: God’s great love for his creation.
God’s gift to us is free, but cost God his own son.
God makes promises to us.
God keeps his promises.
God is faithful
Principle to be learned: Receive God’s Gift by faith
Be very grateful that God chose us to
receive his free gift.
Show our gratitude by loving God and
obey his word.
Keep our promises to God and to others
Be faithful in all that God has called us
to do
GOD PROMISED TO COME LIVE AMONG MEN.
The bible says that God promised, through the old testament prophets, that someday, because he
loved his people so much, that he would come to earth as a man and live for a little while with people
on earth so that he could offer himself as a lamb for a sacrifice for the sins of all who would believe
in him.
GOD TELLS HOW HE WILL COME.
The prophet Isaiah said: “Therefore, the Lord himself shall give you a sign: behold, a virgin shall
conceive, (or become pregnant), and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” Isaiah 7: 14.
Immanuel means that God is with us.
A virgin is a young woman who had not lived with a husband. Unless a woman lived with her
husband, it would be impossible for her to have a baby, unless, of course, God performed a special
miracle. This is exactly what God said he was going t do.
GOD CHOSE A FAITHFUL SERVANT WHOM HE COULD USE FOR THE BIRTH OF HIS
SON.
Mary was a young girl who was married to a man by the name of Joseph, but they had not yet lived
together as husband and wife.
Mary was chosen by God to be the mother of his son because she believed God’s word, and wanted
to serve him the best she could. God sent the angel to Mary to tell her that she was blessed among
women, and highly favored of God to be chosen to be the mother of our Lord and savior Jesus
Christ.
The bible says: The angel Gabriel came to her and said:” Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord
is with thee. Blessed art thou among women-----”Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favor with
God and behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, (or become pregnant), and bring forth a son, and
shall call his name Jesus.” Luke 1: 28-31.
MARY BECAME DOUBTFUL AND SAID:”HOW CAN THIS BE?’
Then Mary said to the angel: “How can this be, because I have not yet lived with my husband?”
THE ANGEL’S REPLY: LUKE 1: 34,35-37.
The angel answered and said unto her: “The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the
highest shall over shadow thee: therefore, that Holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called
the son of God. With God nothing shall be impossible.”
CONSIDER THE HONOR THAT GOD BESTOWED UPON MARY FOR HER
FAITHFULNESS TO HIM.
Can you imagine what a great privilege and honor it must have been for Mary to be chosen to be the
mother of the son of God who would be the savior f the World?
We never know how some day God might choose to use some of us if we will believe in him as
Mary did, and live for him and obey his word.
GOD’S PROMISE TO COME TO EARTH WAS MADE THROUGH HIS PROPHETS, OR OLD
TESTAMENT PREACHERS.
When God promised his people long ago that some day he would come and live on the earth for a
little while with them so that he could teach them ,and save them and us today, he spoke through his
prophet Micah, and even told the name of the town in which Jesus was to be born 700 years before
Jesus was born.
GOD TOLD THE NAME OF THE TOWN WHERE JESUS WAS TO BE BORN.
God said that Jesus was to be born in the town of Bethlehem. “But thou Bethlehem, Ephrata,
though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that
is to be ruler in Israel: whose going forth have been from old, from everlasting.“ Micah 5:2
ALL THINGS ARE IN GOD’S PLAN AND PURPOSE.
Can you imagine someone writing a book and telling the whole world the name of the town that you
would be born in 700 years before you were born, even before your parents were born, or even
before the town even existed. You see, boys and girls, God knows and sees everything before it
even exists.
God planned from the very beginning of creation to send his son Jesus into the world to save all f us
who would believe and trust him and it was God’s plan for him to be born in Bethlehem.
GOD ALWAYS KEEPS HIS PROM,ISES.
God always keeps his promises. When God promises you something he will always do for you that
which he says he will do
HE WILL DO FOR YOU WHAT HE PROMISES.
This is why we should carefully read and study the bible so that we can learn what all the promises
of God are for us.
THE TIME HAD NOW COME FOR GOD TO KEEP HIS PROMISE.
As God had promised, when the fullness of time had come, or when the time for Mary to give birth
to Jesus had come, the bible says that there went out a decree or an order from Caesar Augustus, the
Roman emperor, that all the world should be taxed, (or pay money to the government).
ALL HAD TO REGISTER IN THE TOWN OF THEIR BIRTH.
Everyone had to go to his own home town, or the town that he was born in, to sign up or register.
This meant that Mary and her husband Joseph had to travel all the way from Nazareth to Bethlehem
to sign up because this was the city of David, or the place where they belonged, (their own home
town}.
DIFFICULT TRAVEL FOR MARY AND JOSEPH IN HER CONDITION.
Travel was very difficult in those days, it would probably take several days to go from Nazareth to
Bethlehem. There were no planes and cars, or trains in those days. People had to walk, or go on
horseback or ride on the back of camels.
Mary and Joseph started out on the long trip to Bethlehem. Mary probably sat on the camel while
Joseph walked along side and led the camel, and tried to make his wife as comfortable as he possibly
could.
GOD HAD PLANNED FOR MARY AND JOSEPH TO BE IN BETHLEHEM AT JUST THE
RIGHT TIME.
Can you see how God planned for Mary and Joseph to be in Bethlehem at just the right time so that
Jesus could be born there as he promised by Micah the prophet? God always keeps his promises.
JOSEPH SEARCHED FOR A COMFORTABLE PLACE FOR MARY TO REST AND GIVE
BIRTH.
The bible says that when they arrived in the little town of Bethlehem, the time had come for Jesus to
be born. Joseph, being a good and kind husband, knew that Mary was probably going to be very
sick and uncomfortable, so he searched around for a place where they could stay. The bible says
that all the places where travelers cold stay in those days were filled because there were so many
people traveling to Bethlehem that there was no comfortable place available. There was no room
for them in the inn. But the bible says that the inn keeper allowed them to go into the barn where the
cows and horses and sheep lived, and find shelter there.
Joseph probably made a comfortable place in the cow stall out of hay and straw where Mary his wife
could rest and have her baby.
JESUS IS BORN. GOD’S PROMISE KEPT.
The bible says: “She brought forth her first born son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid
him in a manger: because there as no room in the inn”.
A manger was a little bin like where thy put the hay and grain for the cows to eat.
The bible says that at the same time that Mary was giving birth to the baby Jesus:
SHEPHERDS WERE OUT IN THE FIELD WATCHING THEIR FLOCKS.
“There were shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock at night.” Luke 2:8.
These men were out there in the field, doing their jobs of watching their sheep, doing the same old
routine that they did most every night.
Can you imagine what it must have been like to be out on the mountain side late at night watching
over their sheep. Perhaps the shepherds were laying on the ground resting, looking up into the
heavens and looking at the stars. Perhaps it was very quiet and restful there that night until
SUDDENLY something very unexpected happened. All of a sudden, the whole mountain side was
lighted up, perhaps brighter than any light or flash of lightening you have ever seen, and suddenly out
of nowhere, they heard singing, and the bible says: “The angel of the Lord came upon them and the
glory of the Lord shone round about them, and they were sore afraid.” Luke 2:9.
The shepherds were probably frightened out of their wits because they could not imagine what was
happening to them until the angel spoke to them and said: “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good
tiding of great joy which shall be to all people, for unto you is born this day, a savior which is Christ
the Lord. You shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in a manger. And suddenly the
sky was filled with angels praising God and saying, glory to
God in the highest, and on earth, peace and good will toward men.” Luke 2: 10-14.
SHEPHERDS RECEIVED THE GOOD NEWS WITH JOY AND GLADNESS.
Immediately the shepherds went to find the new born baby and bring him gifts and worshipped him.
Boys and girls, this little baby Jesus was born purposely as God had planned and promised, so that
he could grow up and show us what God, whom we cannot see, is like, and to take all the blame and
punishment for all our sins and wrong doing, and suffer, bleed, and die on the cross for us in our
place, so that if we will believe him and trust him, and ask him into our hearts to be our own savior,
he will give to us the most wonderful and blessed gift that anyone could ever give or anyone could
ever receive. That gift is the forgiveness of sins, and eternal life and a place with him in heaven
forever. Jesus died, but he did not stay dead. The bible says that God has raised him from the dead,
and for all who will take the gift that God is offering to all those who will believe, God will also raise
us up, and give us a place in Heaven. God wants to give you a most wonderful Christmas gift right
now. Will you receive it by believing, and ask him to save you and be your savior and Lord?
Lesson # 2
Lesson title: Obedience!
Objective: To teach the importance of being obedient to God, Parents, and to those in
authority over us.
Results of being obedient: --Good things happen in our lives, and we receive God's.
blessings
Results of being disobedient: -- Bad things happen in our lives, and we end up being
unhappy, and some times lose those thing that we love most, we lose fellowship with God,
and in the end are punished for our disobedience.
Scripture reference: 1 Samuel Chapter 15.
God had chosen Saul to be king of Israel.
When Saul was king, God told him to go and destroy all of the Amalakites, who were God.s enemies
and not to spare any, not even women and children, nor any of the animals, and not to take any of
their treasures or idols. He was to destroy every thing and spare nothing.
GOD DEMANDS PERFECT OBEDIENCE FROM THOSE WHOM HE
CHOOSES:
"Samuel also said unto Saul, The Lord sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel:
now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the Lord. Thus saith the Lord of host, I
remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up
from Egypt. Now go and smite Amalek and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not;
but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass. And Saul gathered
the people together, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten
thousand men of Judah. And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley." 1 Samuel
15: 1-5. "And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until thou comest to to Shur, that is over
against Egypt. And he took Aag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people
with the edge of the sword. But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of
the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy
them: but everything that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly." ! Samuel 15:7-9.
Did Saul completely obey God?
No! He did not completely obey the will of God.
He spared Agag , the king , and the best of the sheep and lambs and all the good things, when God
had told him to destroy everything.
Disobedience means demotion from the ranks of God's honor.
"Then came the word of the Lord unto Samuel, saying, it repented me that I have set up Saul to be
king, for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it
grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the Lord all night." 1 Samuel 15: 10,11.
Saul thought he could serve God by doing things his own way. He thought that he could use the
sheep and the lambs which he had spared, to make sacrifices to God, but God was not pleased with
his disobedience, and no longer would allow him to be king.
Saul lost his kingdom because of his disobedience..
"Then Samuel said unto Saul, stay, and I will tell thee what the Lord hath said to me this night. And
he said unto him, say on. And Samuel said, when thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not
made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the Lord anointed thee king over Israel. And the Lord sent
thee on a journey, and said, go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them
until they be consumed. Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the Lord, but didst fly
upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the Lord? And Saul said unto Samuel, yea, I have
obeyed the voice of the Lord, and have gone the way which the Lord sent me, and have brought
Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. But the people took of the
spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice
unto the Lord thy God in Gilgal. And Samuel said, hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offering
and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice,
and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and
stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord,
he hath also rejected thee from being king." 1 Samuel 15: 16-23
Obedience shows that we believe.
The bible teaches us that obedience is the very best way to show that we believe God.
Obedience opens doors.
Obedience is the key that opens the door to God's blessing,
God will only use obedient servants.
When God sees that we are willing to believe him and obey his word, then he can trust us with some
big and important things.
David was an obedient servant whom God could use
We have learned in previous lessons how David obeyed God, and God helped him to become a great
king. Because David obeyed God, he keep growing stronger and stronger on the inside.
Joy and happiness comes from being obedient.
There is a lot of joy and happiness that comes to us from growing strong through obedience to God's
word. We ought to desire to obey God in all things. One thing we have learned about David is that
he thought it was very important to obey God.
Obedience shows our love for God and our trust in him, and that we hate sin as
God does.
Can you think of a reason why it should be so important to show that we love God?
Ans: It is so important that we show that we love God, because God loves us, and wants the very
best for us. It is wrong to disobey God. We can only grow strong on the inside when we obey
God. God is holy and hates sin. Whenever we are disobedient, we are sinning and this is what God
hates. How about if we disobey our parents, or teachers? Do you think God is happy when we do?
We learned how Saul disobeyed and was rejected by God to no longer be king.
Saul disobeyed God, so God could no longer allow him to be king. God chose David to be king
instead. That was one way David learned that obedience is very important. He also learned that
disobedience caused trouble and grief.
One day David disobeyed and some bad things happened.
Do you remember from previous lessons how that David went into the land of the Philistines without
praying and asking God what to do? Do you remember what happened? While David and his men
were absent from the city without God's permission, their wives and children were taken captive by
their enemy, and the city burned.
After David learned to be obedient to the will of God and do things God's way, he became a great
king because God was with him.
When we choose to obey God, God is always with us and helps us to do the things that are hard for
us to do by ourselves.
David always wanted to do things God's way, not his own way.
David knew that God had chosen him to be the king, but what did he do after Saul's death? Did he
just tell all of God's people that he was king now, and he would tell them what t do?
No! He prayed and asked God what he was supposed to do. God told him to go to the city of
Hebron. The men in the city came to David. They anointed him to be their king because they
knew that he was the man whom God had chosen to be king.
For a time, some people wanted Saul's family to still be king. But after a while,
they knew that David was the one chosen by God.
Some people were still loyal to Saul's family. They did not want David to be their king. There was
a long war between David's men and these people. Finally after seven years, the rest of the people
came and said: "You are the one to be our king. Even when Saul was king, you were really our
leader. The Lord has told you to be the captain over us.
We must obey God when he tells us to worship no one or anything except him.
Now that David was king, there was much that he had to do. There were enemies living in the land
who worshipped idols instead of God. God had commanded his people to defeat these enemies, and
to take the land, but his people had not obeyed.
When David's old enemy the Philistines heard that David was now king over all God's people, they
went to war against him. David prayed and asked the Lord: "Shall I go and fight the Philistines, will
you give me the victory over them?"
We should always pray and ask God's permission and blessing before we do
anything.
God answered David: "Go up and fight them, I will give you the victory over them."
God kept his promise and God's people defeated the Philistines. But the Philistines went to war
again and again. David prayed, and God told him how to win the victory.
When David lived in the palace with Saul, he saw the results of disobedience.
David had lived in Saul's palace when he was a young man. He had seen how Saul disobeyed God.
He knew that God had chosen him to be king because of Saul's disobedience. David wanted to obey
God and do those things that pleased him.
David asked God's permission to build a temple. David did not disobey, and have
a tantrum when God said no.
One of the things that David wanted to do was to build a beautiful house where people could come
and worship God. He wanted it to be the most beautiful building in Jerusalem. But God told him he
could not build the temple because he was a man of war, but he could gather the materials for the
temple so that his son would build it someday.
David obeyed by doing exactly what God told him to do.
What did David do when God said no to him?
David praised God, and thanked him for his promise to be with him. He did what God said he could
do and began to collect the materials for his son to use some day. He did not disobey God.
David was a good and powerful king because he obeyed God and God was with him.
David became a strong and powerful king because he depended upon God to help him.
Questions;
Was David happy or unhappy when he obeyed God?
Ans: He was happy.
Just as David was happy when he obeyed, so we will be happy when we obey him and all those that
God has put in authority over us. (Parents, teachers, police, etc)
Is there something that you can think of that you need to do to obey God?
Maybe it is something that you do not like to do but you know it would please God if you did it.
Can you think of something that with God's help, you are going to do to obey God
and please him this coming week?
How about reading his word, the bible every day and praying?
Story time:
How Jimmy Learned Obedience - The hard way!
By: Robert A. Searles
All rights reserved.
Jimmy was not a bad boy, no, in fact Jimmy was a very good boy as boys his age go, but Jimmy was
so busy having fun and doing the things that he wanted to do, and he was so energetic that he found
it very difficult sometimes to slow down, and pay attention to what older people had to say to him,
particularly when his mother asked him to do something for her like, take out the garbage, or pick up
his things, or wipe his feet when he came into the house, or close the door behind him.
Jimmy had a good home and family, he lived with his mother and father and sister Susan in the big
house on Maple street. Often Jimmy and Susan would ride their bicycles or roller skate down their
long drive way that led from their house to Maple street
Many times Jimmy did not remember when his mother reminded him to put away his skates or
bicycle when he was finished with them, Instead, he had a very bad habit of leaving his skates on
the steps, or his bicycle laying in the drive way. As a result of Jimmy's negligence and disobedience,
one day when dad came home from work, he tripped on the skates that Jimmy had left on the steps.
He fell and injured his leg, and had to be out of work for a week.
On Sundays, mom and dad, Susan and Jimmy, all went to Sunday school and church. Jimmy loved
to meet with all his friends in Sunday school and sing the happy songs that they learned when they
went to Sunday school. He often thought of how beautiful heaven must be for one to go to some
day; but he wasn't quite sure if he would make it, because he thought he could not be good enough.
Jimmy remembered one Sunday when his teacher taught the class that God does not require
sacrifices, but is full of mercy and forgiveness. He remembered one day when his teacher read from
the bible how God had said that obedience is more acceptable to him than sacrifice.
As a boy of his age might do, Jimmy thought , well, I am obedient most of the time, but maybe you
don't have to be obedient all the time, after all, he thought, sometimes boys have to show how grown
up they are by doing exactly what they want to do. He thought, even though God's word says that
being obedient to one's parents or teachers, or policemen and other authorities, is the same as being
obedient to God himself, sometimes parents make mistakes and they too are not obedient all the time.
Oh well, today was Jimmy's tenth birthday, and he was not going to think about these serious
matters. He was just going to have fun and do the things that he wanted to do today. He spent most
of the day trying to guess what he was getting for his birthday. His dad had told him to stay close to
home, because when he came home, he would have a birthday surprise for him..
What could it possibly be? Jimmy thought all day long. As the day progressed, Jimmy became more
and more excited. It seemed as if it would never come time for his dad to come home.
Finally, the hour had arrived for dad's return from work. Jimmy heard his dad's car starting up the
long driveway, and then he saw it, and finally it stopped in front of the house. Dad got out of the car
and stretched out his arms to greet his son and said: "Happy birthday, Jimmy, have you been good
today?" Jimmy didn't really want to answer that question, but it didn't really matter because his dad
did not pursue the question.
Mother was in the kitchen, and Susan was helping to prepare birthday cake that they would enjoy
together that evening to celebrate Jimmy's tenth birthday.
"Well", said Jimmy's father,"What are you waiting for? Go, look in the back seat of the car and you
will find your birthday surprise that I promised you this morning." Jimmy knew that his dad would
not disappoint him. Although he knew that his dad was not perfect, and sometimes made mistakes,
he was a good father, and he always tried to set some good example before his family, and try to be
as much like God as he could be, and be a good father, because he knew that God never
disappointed anyone, and always kept his word.
Hurriedly, Jimmy ran to the car, not knowing what to expect, he pulled open the back door of the car
and looked in. On the floor he spied a box, not an ordinary box, somehow this box was different. It
was long and wide and tall. Jimmy eagerly reached for the box and lifted it out of the car. It was
quite heavy. What in the world could it be? He thought! Perhaps it is a radio, or TV, or a new
game to play! He could hardly wait to see what was inside. As he looked at the box, Jimmy noticed
that there was something rather peculiar about it. It had holes about the size of a quarter all the way
around it. He must be imagining things, he thought, but he could swear that he felt something move
inside the box.
"Well, just don't stand there gazing at the box" dad said: "Hurry up and open it." Jimmy pulled the
cover off the box as fast as he could and gazed inside. What do you think he saw? There inside the
box was the cutest little brown puppy that you ever saw. Jimmy couldn't quite believe his eyes, he
always wanted a real live puppy to play with and to be his friend and companion, and now he had
one.
Immediately, he thought of how good his parents were to him, and how good God was for giving him
such good parents who loved him so much that they wanted to make him happy this way.
"Now, the puppy is your responsibility, " dad said. "You will have to see to it that he is kept clean,
and has plenty of food and water, and is properly cared for and loved. Puppies need tender loving
care just as boys and girls do".
"If you will teach him to obey you, you can teach him to do tricks, and play games with you. He will
be your best friend. You will also have to find a name for him".
Jimmy thought and thought, what would be a good name for his new friend? He noticed that one of
the puppy's ears would not stay in place where it was supposed to be. It kept flopping or falling
down over one eye. Then it suddenly dawned on him. I know what I will do, I will call him
"floppy", so, "Floppy" became his name.
Weeks and month passed, Floppy and Jimmy and Susan became the best of companions and
friends. They ran together and played together. Floppy learned to do tricks. Floppy followed
Jimmy everywhere he went. Wherever Jimmy went, there was floppy right at his heels.
One day when Jimmy became bored with hanging around the house, he asked his mother for
permission to go to the playground over across Maple street. She gave her permission, but said:
"Please, Jimmy , close the door behind you so that floppy will not get out and follow you, because
you know that he wants to be with you, and will follow you wherever you go." "Ok mom!" Jimmy
exclaimed! He was so excited and eager to go to the playground and use the new swings and
equipment that was available there, that he opened the door and ran out of the house, but what do
you think happened? Did he listen to his mom and close the door behind him? Once again, Jimmy
was so concerned with himself and what he wanted to do that he did not pay attention and obey.
He ran down the long driveway, stopped, looked both ways before crossing Maple street, and went
across to the playground. As he was approaching the other side of the street, suddenly he heard the
screeching of brakes, he heard a pitiful yelp, and then silence.
Oh! No! Could it be? He was afraid to turn and look back, but he did turn and look back, and there
he saw to his grief, there in the middle of Maple street was a truck stopped, and in from of the truck
there he saw what he had hoped he would not see. There on the pavement was a mass of brown fur
and blood and crushed bones, which just a few moments before had been his loving, faithful friend.
Never again would Floppy run and fetch a ball, never again would he wait at the school bus, and
wag his tail and bark in excitement when Jimmy came home from school. Never again would his ear
fall over his eye and earn the name of "Floppy"
As you can guess, Jimmy was grief stricken. Oh, If he had only listened, he thought. If only I had
closed the door when mother asked me to. If only--- If only I had been obedient, but he had not
been obedient. Now it was too late.
Because of his negligence and disobedience, Jimmy had lost his best friend forever. This is a sad
ending to our story, but it is important for boys and girls, and adults alike to learn that disobedience
to God, and to parents, and to teachers and other authorities can be very costly, and bring grief and
destroy lives. God's word tells us that disobedience is as the sin of witchcraft.

LESSON # 3
FAITH
DEFINE FAITH
WHAT IS FAITH?
ANS: Faith is believing without seeing. If you have faith, you believe that something exists and is real
even though you have never seen it, nor can prove it.
EXAMPLES OF UNSEEN THINGS:
NAME SOME THINGS THAT WE BELIEVE IN EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE NEVER SEEN.
ANS: The air that we breath - we cannot see it but we know that we cannot live without it.
The wind that blows - we cannot see the wind itself, and no one really knows what it is, but we
see how it makes the leaves and the trees move, and we can feel it when it touches our face.
We can not see electricity, but we know that it is rel because it lights our houses, and keeps us
warm, and runs our refrigerators etc.
We can logically believe that God is real, even though we cannot see him because we can see
the things that he has made, and know his love in our hearts.
FAITH IS THE RESULT OF HEARING
Faith is hearing, then believing. If we believe what we hear, then we have faith that what we
are hearing is true and we can depend upon it.
WHAT DO WE HEAR THAT CAUSES US TO BELIEVE?
CAN YOU THINK OF SOME THINGS THAT WE HEAR THAT CAUSES US TO BELIEVE
SOMETHING?
If you hear a fire siren you believe that there is a fire someplace, don't you? Even though you
do not see the fire.
If you hear a train whistle blow, you believe that there is a train coming down the track, even
though you cannot see it yet, and if you are smart you will get off the track.
BE CAREFUL LITTLE EARS WHAT YOU HEAR
SHOULD WE BELIEVE EVERYTHING WE HEAR TO BE TRUE?
Should we believer that everything we hear is true? Sometimes people tell us things that are
nor true, don't they? What then should we believe?
Faith is always the result of believing, but there is a good kind of faith, and there is a bad kind
of faith.
FAITH IS REASONABLE
When we have the good kind of faith, we always have a good reason for what we believe.
A bad kind of faith is believing something that we want to be true, even if there is no real
reason for us to believe.
THERE SHOULD ALWAYS BE A REASON FOR BELIEVING
We have every good reason to believe in God and in Jesus Christ our savior whom we have
never seen, because we have the bible, the word of God which cannot lie because the bible
has proven to be reliable down through the ages, and it tells us about God, and about Jesus,
and the things that we cannot see with our eyes.
We read in the bible about people who have talked with God, and have seen Jesus and lived
and talked with him, and had seen his miracles. We believe what they tell us, and we have
faith in what we have heard from them.
WE CAN BELIEVE GOD
God speaks to us in the bible, and because he is God, we know that we can believe what he
says because he is trustworthy. Our faith to believe what we cannot see about god is the
good kind of faith, and is built upon the sure foundation of the word of God.
THE BIBLE SAYS THAT WITHOUT FAITH IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO PLEASE GOD
This means that we cannot make God happy with us unless we are willing to believe what he
has told us in his word.
HOW DO WE GET FAITH?
How do we get the faith to believe God
ANS: "So then, faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by he word of God." Romans 10: 17
Faith to believe is a gift that God gies to us when we study and listen to the teaching of his
word, the bible.
WHAT IS FAITH?
FAITH IS BELIEVING, AND THEN ACTING UPON WHAT WE BELIEVE.
DO THAT WHICH WE BELIEVE WE OUGHT TO DO.
If we really do have faith, and believe that something is true, then we will act upon our faith
and live in such a way as if what we believe is really true.
If the fireman believes that there is a fire when they hear the fire whistle or siren, they go to
find the fire and put it out.. If you are walking on the railroad track and don't see the train
but you hear the whistle and believe the train is coming, you will immediately get off the
track and be safe.
If you believe tat the chair will hold you up, you will sit in it.
If you have faith in the word of God, and believe it is true when it says: unless we ask Jesus
to be our savior and forgive our sins we will some day die and go to that horrible place
called hell; you will act upon what you believe to be true, and tell Jesus, even now , at this
moment, that you are sorry for your sins, and want him to save you ad take you to heaven
some day.
If we don't act the way we say we believe, then we don't really have faith. If we really
believe and have faith in God, then we will do the things he tells us to do.
The most important thing he tells us to do is to ask Jesus to be our savior and come into our
hearts to live
STORY TIME
Our story today is about a man who heard the word of God.
He believed the word of God that he heard ( God gave him faith to believe).
He acted upon his faith and lived as if what he heard and believed was true.
Because he heard, and believed, and acted on his faith, he went on his way rejoicing.
The bible says that when Peter and John came into the temple at the hour of prayer about
three O clock in the afternoon (which was the custom of Jewish people to do), along with
a lot of other people, they met a man who was lame from his birth whom his friends
brought there every day to beg. When he saw Peter and John he asked them for money.
They told him they had none but gave him the word of God: how Jesus came to save and
to heal. They told him to rise up in the name of Jesus and walk. The lame man heard the
word. He believed what he heard (he exercised his faith). He did what he was asked to do
based upon what he had heard. He acted upon his faith. He rose up and began to walk.
The result was that he was healed and went his way rejoicing.
BOYS AND GIRLS, WHAT MUST YOU DO TO BE SAVED AND HAVE A HAPPY LIFE AND
GO YOUR WAY REJOICING.
ANS: Listen to the word of God. Believe the word of God, have faith in God's word, and do
what God's word tells us to do.
HEAR!
BELIEVE - HAVE FAITH!
ACT- GO AWAY REJOICING!
Lesson # 4
Subject: Prayer
What is Prayer?
How do we pray?
DEFINE PRAYER;
Boys and girls, who can tell me what prayer is,
ANS; Prayer is calling to someone and asking for something that we earnestly desire, especially to God.
ILLUSTRATE:
Have you ever been in your room, or outside playing, and your parents or someone has called to you
and asked you to do something? Did you hear them calling you, and did you answer?
THE BIBLE TELLS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE PRAY:
The bible tells us that God always hears us, and answers us when we call to him.
Jeremiah 33:3 tells us: “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things“.
WHEN WE CALL UPON GOD, WE MUST BELIEVE HE HEARS US:
God who is all powerful, hears and answers prayers, but we must have faith and believe that God
hears us when we call unto him.
DO YOU REMEMBER WHAT FAITH IS?
ANS: Faith is to believe without seeing.
FAITH PLEASES GOD:
When we pray, if we believe that God is listening to us, even when we cannot see him, ,it Pleases
God. Without faith. It is impossible to please God.
WHERE AND WHEN CAN WE PRAY?
When can we pray or call upon God? Only when we are in church or Sunday school? Why of course
not, we can call upon God from any place that we happen to be and at anytime and he will hear us
and answer us.
JESUS CHRIST, OUR LORD AND SAVIOR AND BEST FRIEND IS READY TO HELP US:
Our Lord and savior Jesus Christ is the very best friend that anyone could ever have, and he is God.
The bible says that he is an ever present help in the time of trouble, and if we have asked him to be
our savior, he is always with us, even if we cannot see him, in fact, he is in your room with you right
now, and he goes with you everywhere you go. Whenever you are afraid, or are in any kind of
trouble, you can call upon him for help.
DID YOU EVER NEED TO HAVE SOME ONE TO HELP YOU DO SOMETHING?
Can you think of some times when you have been afraid of something or have been in some kind of
trouble, and you wanted to call to someone to help you?
HEZEKIAH NEEDED HELP, HE CALLED UPON GOD:
Today we are going to learn about a man in the bible who was in a great deal of trouble and needed
help desperately. He called out to God, and God heard him and answered his prayer.
HEZEKIAH WAS A GOOD KING:
Hezekiah was a good king who wanted his people to worship the true and living God.
HEZEKIAH LIVED TO WORSHIP AND PLEASE GOD:
When Hezekiah became king of Judah, he was only twenty five years old, and because he wanted to
serve and please God, he tore down and destroyed all the idols that other kings before him had
allowed to be built and set up to worship false gods.
HE TRUSTED GOD, GOD WAS WITH HIM ALWAYS:
Because Hezekiah trusted God, God was with him as he had been with David may years before. He
helped Hezekiah in all that he did.
A POWERFUL ENEMY CAME TO DESTROY THE CITY:
Now, Hezekiah was in a great deal of trouble. Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, had sent his powerful
army marching into the land. Thousands of soldiers were camped outside the high walls of
Jerusalem. Sennacherib demanded that king Hezekiah and his people surrender. If they did not
surrender, the Assyrians army would stay camped outside the walls. King Hezekiah’s people would
be unable to go out to get food, and after a time they would starve to death.
\
ENEMY MESSENGERS DEMANDED SURRENDER.:
Messengers from the enemy came close to the wall to demand that king Hezekiah surrender
immediately. They shouted for the king to come and speak with them, but Hezekiah sent three
messengers to hear what the enemy would say.
ENEMY MESSENGERS MOCKED GOD:
They said: “Tell Hezekiah it would be foolish for him to fight against our great king of Assyria. You
don’t have any one to help you fight against us.”
THE ENEMY TRIED TO DISCOURAGE HEZEKIAH FROM TRUSTING GOD.:
“Don’t think that you can get help from Egypt for they cannot help you, and if Hezekiah tells you to
trust in the Lord, don’t listen to him for the Lord your God cannot help you. Why should he help
you, you have torn down all the altars and places of worship to all the gods.”
These messengers from the enemy did not know that those altars were for the worship of idols, nor
did they know that the people were trusting in the one and only true God
The captain of the Assyrians lied to the people and told them that the Lord had told them to come to
the city of Jerusalem to destroy it. He thought that this would make the people so afraid that they
would surrender. He shouted again with a loud voice: “Hezekiah cannot save you, your God cannot
save you, surrender and we will take you to our land.
HEZEKIAH BECAME WORRIED AND SORROWFUL:
Hezekiah‘s messengers hurried back to tell the king what they had heard. When he heard the threats
and lies of the captain of the Assyrians, he tore off his clothes. This showed how worried and
troubled he was. then he put on rough sackcloth to show his sorrow..
HEZEKIAH DID A WISE THING:
WHAT DID HE DO?
ANS: Hezekiah went into the house of the Lord to pray - to call upon God for help. He knew that
only God could rescue him from his enemy. His army was not large or strong enough to fight against
the enemy.
HEZEKIAH DID THE RIGHT THING. HE WANTED TO HEAR FROM GOD.
Then Hezekiah sent messengers to Isaiah, the prophet of God. He sought the word of God to
know what God would have him to do. The word of God which came to Hezekiah through Isaiah
was: “tell the king the Lord has said, don‘t be afraid of the words spoken against me, I will cause
Sennacherib to return to his own country..
HEZEKIAH WAS GLAD TO HEAR FROM GOD THROUGH THE PROPHET:
Hezekiah was glad to hear from God through the prophet Isaiah, but then he received a letter from
Sennacherib which said: “Don’t let your God deceive you into thinking he can keep you safe from
me. You have heard what I have done to all the other nations, I will defeat you too.
Sennacherib did not know that he was talking about the all powerful God who made heaven and
earth. He thought that he was greater than God.
AGAIN HEZEKIAH PRAYED AND CALLED UPON GOD FOR HELP:
Hezekiah took the letter and went into the house of God and he prayed: “O Lord God of Israel, you
alone are God. You made heaven and earth. Lord, hear my prayer and save us from the enemy.
Make all nations to know that you are the living God. You alone are God.
GOD ANSWERED HEZEKIAH’S PRAYER:
God answered Hezekiah’s prayer and again spoke to him through Isaiah the prophet who sent a
message to the king saying: “I have heard what you prayed. Because the people of Assyria have
spoken against me, the holy God, I will defend this city and save it.
WHAT WOULD HAPPEN? ONLY GOD COULD SAVE THEM
THAT NIGHT GOD KEPT HIS PROMISE TO SAVE THE CITY:
That night the enemy soldiers all went to sleep in their camps all around the city. While they slept, the
bible says that the angel of the Lord struck the enemy soldiers with his mighty power and many of
them became sick and died. When the other soldiers got up in the morning and discovered dead men
all around them they became afraid. They knew now that their army was too small and too weak to
fight against Israel and Israel’s God. They quickly left and went back to their own country.
THEY KNEW NOW THAT THEY COULD NOT WIN AGAINST GOD:
The mighty God of Israel had heard and answered Hezekiah’s prayer.
WHY DID GOD ANSWER HEZEKIAH’S PRAYER?
ANS: Because Hezekiah loved and worshipped God and tried to obey him.
He had faith, he believed without seeing that God would help him.
WHEN DID HEZEKIAH PRAY?
Hezekiah prayed when he was afraid and in trouble.
WHEN DO WE NEED TO PRAY?
God wants us to talk to him in prayer all the time and to come to him with all our cares and needs. He
has promised to give us all that we need. If we are members of God’s family. He is our heavenly
father.. God wants us to talk to him even when we are not asking for something. He wants us to
praise him.
WHAT DOES PRAISE MEAN?
ANS: To tell God, and make known to the world around us just how good God is , and thank him for
all his blessings.
GOD WILL RESCUE US FROM SIN AND SATAN:
No problem is too small or too great for God. If we have sinned, he will forgive us when we confess
it to him. If we call upon him to save us from being lost and going to hell, he will hear us. When we
call upon the Lord Jesus Christ and ask him to come into our hearts and save us.
Boys and girls, or parents who may be reading this lesson today, do you have faith to believe God’s
word.? If you have not already done so, won’t you agree with God that like all the rest of us, you are
a sinner and need salvation…? Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners and give them eternal
life. The bible says that whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved…
Call upon him in faith today and be saved.
